Recently the new, 4.1 Beta version of one of the most well-known mobile Internet Browsers - Opera Mini has been released...

The new release is fantastic. Those features which were presented in the new version, take Opera Mini to the new level despite being a Beta version at the moment :)

As I've already noted, the new release of the Opera Mini includes quite many new features, which make web surfing much easier and comfortable, like automatic completion of Web addresses, attaching files to Web-based email, uploading photos to your blog or other sites, downloading attachments from email for storage on your phone, saving and viewing pages offline, etc.

One of the my favorite features in the new Opera Mini is that, from now on, we don't need to open editor mode for entering web address. The new Opera Mini has new address bar as on desktop browsers. We just need to click on the address bar and locally enter new web address. It also supports automatic completion of web addresses, which makes surfing very comfortable... Except of the dashboard, new address bar is also available in the surfing mode. When you are surfing, just open "Menu", choose "Enter Address" and the new address bar appears on the top of the screen :)

Next novelty is availability of the downloading and uploading files. On phones with JSR-75, we can now upload and download files without being re-routed to the phone’s native browser. We are now able to update blogs while on the go. Upload photos to web sites or social networks and one of the most important features in my opinion, from now on we are able to add attachments to Web-based email and download other non media-rich content to the phone using new Opera Mini.

The next great feature I think is the availability of the saving web pages for viewing it in offline mode. It's very comfortable when we cannot get network reception. (Depending on your phone, you may need to choose a destination folder for storing pages for offline viewing.)

New Opera Mini also lets us search for text within a Web page so we can get to the information we need even quicker than before.

So I guess with this new version, we've got absolutely new and much more powerful browser, which is not only for smartphones :)

As usual Opera Mini is free and if you want to try the new version, you need to go here to download it (Please note that it's only Beta version!!!)

There are quite many Java applications for messengers like: Yahoo!, ICQ, MSN, Google Talk, AIM, Jabber and e.t.c. Of course those applications are for any J2ME enabled phone and not only for smartphones. But what about Skype?

As we know there is no problem with Skype for Symbian UIQ3 devices. We can find Skype client for UIQ on Sony Ericsson's official website, in the software category (Fun & Downloads). The little application is called iSkoot, which we can download and use it without any problems. However, what about standard J2ME enabled phones? Moreover, as we know, most of the Sony Ericsson handsets are from this list.

One may think that we must have smartphones to use that brilliant messenger and there is no Skype for Sony Ericsson J2ME phones. But wait a second. Not only does a Skype client for J2ME phones exist but we even have a choice here.

So let's have a quick look at some of the Java applications for J2ME Sony Ericsson handsets that can be used with Skype.

Let's start from

Nimbuzz:

It's time to Join Mobile Freedom! Get all the Nimbuzz features in the palm of your hand. Call, chat, text and more. For free.

Nimbuzz Mobile lets you:
Call, Chat/Chatrooms/Groupchat, Text messaging, Share photos, music, video, Send voice messages, Manage address book, Set status, Buzz (get friends online)

WebMessenger Mobile for Skype:

Skype users can now dramatically reduce long distance and roaming charges from their mobile phones using the new WebMessenger Mobile for Skype mobile client. WebMessenger allows you to take Skype on the road with you. Check the availability of colleagues, friends, and family on your mobile phone, send and receive chat messages, or even simply click on them to give them a quick shout.
By triggering your active SkypeOut account, WebMessenger Mobile for Skype allows you to call anywhere around the world at very low rates.
There is no additional cost for using WebMessenger Mobile for Skype. Download and use our completely free software version, or upgrade at any time to our even more feature rich subscription version with just one low monthly fee.

IM+ for Skype:

IM+ for Skype is a fully mobile application that enables voice and text communication with other Skype users and provides cost-effective calling to
landlines and mobiles.

I think thats quite enough for now and of course none of them is official application from Skype, but while we are waiting Skype to create some Java messenger for us, we can use those applications :)

Happy Skyping!

Why do most of people like Smartphones? Probably because smartphones provide a lot of fun or maybe for deliver some important functionality, like Messengers, internet browsing, RSS, Password managers, e.t.c. But wait, we, I mean ordinary users of Sony Ericsson's non smarts, we all can use the same things, we can have messengers and RSS readers and browsers, and lot of other things that smartphones support. How? Glad you asked. Little Java applications gonna help us with that :)

trutap is free to join and use, but your phone network may charge you for using the Internet on your phone. Charges are normally based on data usage, so sending/receiving messages uses very little data, but pictures can use a bit more. For more info check your price plan with your Operator.

On January 6, 2008, Sony Ericsson announced the new W760 Walkman® mobile phone - the eighth Sony Ericsson phone to support the Mobile Services Architecture (MSA) umbrella tandard (JSR 248). This tri-band HSDPA slider-style phone features music management with Shake Control and track discovery using TrackID™, 3D gaming boosted by an accelerometer and A/B buttons, and assisted GPS.

MSA can now be found in eight Sony Ericsson phone series - the K630, K660, K850, V640, W760, W890, W910 and Z750 – giving developers a range of Java™ ME programming features including instant messaging/chat and presence based functionality, handling banking, payment transactions, user identification and authentication through secure encryption technology.

W760 in more detail
The W760 Walkman phone has a raft of entertainment options. The Walkman player 3.0 supports a range of audio formats, the SensMe™ feature automatically plots music by tempo and mood, and playlists can be navigated using the Shake Control to skip and shuffle tracks by shaking the phone.

The TrackID music recognition service has proven to be a popular feature of Sony Ericsson Walkman mobile phones – over 125,000 hits per day - and is included in the W760, enabling end-users to identify tracks playing on the inbuilt FM radio or through an external source.

Assisted GPS
The W760 has an inbuilt GPS receiver and comes preloaded with navigation applications for example Wayfinder Navigator and Google Maps for Mobile. There is also a GPS-supported fitness application called Tracker to inform you how far and fast you have been walking/running.

Gaming using JSR 256, Mobile Sensor API for accelerometer applications
The W760 supports the Mobile Sensor API (JSR 256), a non-mandated MSA JSR, and comes preloaded with EA Games' Need for Speed™ ProStreet™ game. This Mascot Capsule v3 game uses JSR 256 to detect movement in the orientation of the phone and translates this input to controlling the car in the driving game.

Sony Ericsson W580i
Researching the latest and greatest, the best sellers are not usually the most technologically advanced devices, because those usually cost and arm and a leg. Instead what sells the most is the best "bang for the buck," often free when purchased with a service plan. With the Mobiledia Best Seller Award, consumers can rest assured that they're getting a great phone at a great price.

The Best Seller list is based on sales reports from InPhonic, the authorized partner of Mobiledia. The award is only given to current phones sold.

Highlighted by orange accents, the Sony Ericsson W580i is illuminated in the dark with light effects along the side that change as users navigate the Walkman music player. The slim form factor hides a Walkman 2.0 music player, making it simple to organize and play favorite tunes. The Disc2Phone music management software and USB cable included in the box allow for easy transfer of music to and from a PC. Listeners can also tune to their favorite radio programming as the W580i offers an RDS-FM radio. Additionally, the Track ID feature makes it easy to identify music tracks not recognized. For impromptu photos, the W580i integrates a 2.0-megapixel camera, also functioning as a portable photo album and pocket gaming device. Fast connectivity allows users to access picture blogging and instant messaging.

Sony Ericsson W580i Features

  • Walkman phones bring the ease of digital music players alongside all the usual advanced phone features, including downloading, streaming, storing and playing back music;
  • Plug in headphones and activate the built-in FM radio with RDS to see which station tuned into, and sometimes, what song is playing;
  • Record a few seconds of a song and use Track ID to send the music for recognition to name the song, artist and album;
  • Transfer tracks straight from a music CD to the phone by dragging and dropping via Disc2Phone CD-ripping software;
  • Extend the memory for up to 1 GB per card with Memory Stick Micro (M2)

At last Opera Mini 4 has been released, which means we can delete old Opera Mini and enjoy faster, more secure and safer browsing with the new Opera Mini 4.

The new version delivers several new improvements, like:
Landscape mode, virtual mouse, enhanced small screen rendering, quick browsing keystrokes, suggested start points, power scrolling shortcuts (via 4, 6, 2, 8 keypad buttons), creation own web search from any search field on the Internet, synchronization of the mobile phone web links with the web links on computer, CSS support and of course faster browsing possibility with less data transfer.

In my opinion Opera Mini is the best Java browser and of course it is still free, so you can go to the official site of the Opera Mini 4, download it and start enjoying all those improvements and new functionality.
