Sony Ericsson hopes to combine its smartphone savvy with its gaming experience to produce a hit with the Xperia Play, one of the first smartphone offerings to cater directly to the gaming crowd. Released in May in most countries, the Xperia Play looks like any other smartphone at first glance but it packs a powerful gaming punch, including a set of dedicated gaming controls that let you enjoy more than 50 PlayStation games on the 4” touch screen. More games are on the way for the Xperia Play and the fact that it’s powered by Android means you’ll also have the option to download other apps and games, opening the door for enjoying Internet blackjack, poker, and other casino games.

Powered by Google’s Gingerbread OS, the slider offers many of the smartphone features that consumers have come to expect. While the phone side of it won’t bowl anyone over, it’s obviously the gaming side where the Xperia Play shines. It comes with two dedicated keypad controls similar to the PSP Go and comes pre-loaded with game titles such as Asphalt Adrenaline 6, Bruce Lee, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, and Tetris. Additional game content is available through the PlayStation Suite platform, as the Xperia Play is one of a handful of devices that is PlayStation Certified, which ensures that all games available via the PlayStation Suite are compatible and will run smoothly on the Xperia Play.

Like any Android smartphone or tablet, owners will also be able to download and play a variety of apps and games in addition to PlayStation titles. Android devices have been a popular choice for online gaming fans who enjoy poker and casino games such as online slot machines; while Apple is very restrictive about approving gambling apps for the App Store the Android Market has to date been much more wide open, with more online gaming sites unveiling Android apps that let users take part in real money poker games as well as online sportsbetting and other popular casino games.

Being a Verizon customer in the US I wish either SE would release the 2.3.4 update to Verizon or if Verizon has it they would release it to us customers. I'm sick of not having all the features so many other's with this phone have because somebody else is dropping the ball. I read also tonight about customers from other markets who have been installing the PS Store app so they can buy games from the Playstation Network. However, you can only do that if you have the 2.3.4 firmware that SE or Verizon have not released to us yet. I love the phone, just wish all Xperia Play owners from all carriers were treated equally.
